Drop a Whiskey Kindling stick into any size Mason jar, then submerge in a whiskey or bourbon (tequila, rum, scotch or brown distilled liquid of choice), and just a bit of time does the rest. Start with a decent mixing standard, a bottle collecting dust, or go ahead — try something on the top shelf. Anything goes.

Taste after 24 hours. You'll notice a marked difference in complexity. Love it? Pull the stick. More flavor? Replace the lid and check back in another 24. Just one or two days transforms an ordinary bottle into something remarkable.

Each stick ages one newly-opened 750ml bottle. Single use — then compost it, bury it in the garden, or keep it for the BBQ and a special smoky flavor.

• Submerge a single Kindling in 750ml of your whiskey or bourbon, but don't forget to reserve a couple ounces for comparing later
• Taste at 24 hours, 36 or 48 — remove Kindling when you've found your sweet spot
